Part 2 (From: http://www.anican.jp/blog/interview/interview.aspx?number=0031)
Just another question about the arrangement. There is a C melody part before the hook, and although the 3 songs before this had a rather speedy melody, this song is also really catchy.
The part of the lyrics that start from “Don-don ikimashou” to “Ganbare otokonoko” were decided from the very beginning. That part was written punk-style, and the Green Day-like style of it was very interesting. From there, the hook was comparatively made short and concise. This was part of the difficulty of starting with the hook, since we had to fit the song into the 1min 30sec length of the anime opening, but we somehow managed it. Also, in the C melody part of “Kono mama ja”, at first we found it too long and shortened it, but later we returned it to its original length. Eventually, we wondered if it might have been better to have changed it.
Essentially, you were still concerned about the length issues of the song, yes?
Ultimately, yes. Initially, I just wrote it without much concern, but it became a difficult problem.
Since we are talking about this song, the music clip (PV) must definitely be mentioned. The rock star costumes of the ’80s were definitely a highlight. As expected of KISHOW-san, was it an Aerosmith influence?
Well, in terms of image, yes. The director approached us with this image in mind, proposing to shoot us in the get-up and atmosphere of this existing foreign rock star, and wondered how close to that image we should get. I was quite calm since I felt I could somehow approach the feel of Stenven Tyler, but for e-zuka-san, he had no idea who he could be.
We thought that his hair could have been modeled after Yngwie.
Not so much Yngwie though, it was more of Marty Friedman. Actually, there wasn’t a distinct model for that image. At the first costume fitting, we couldn’t decide on an image, so countless outfits were brought over on the actual day. We just thought, if it was a rock star, can’t we just put together some leopart prints, long hair and sunglasses? (laughs)
Yes, it was very rock-star-like (laughs). But the highlight of the music clip would be the cute girl, yes?
That’s right! That would be the ultimate highlight. The boy was also good-looking and they make a fine pair, so we hope you would enjoy that part too.
There was quite a difference between the alternate reality drama and the band performance.
It was completely different. In terms of the feel, and even the cameras used. Do watch the full music clip.
The coupling song “Zetchou Poison” was an unusual song based on the motif of Snow White.
The staff told us, that they wanted to hear a swing tune (as in jazz) in minor. After much thought we realised we have not written any swing music, making us wonder if we are bad at it, so this was a good chance to try.
Because the tune was swing, and rather dark, I thought of adding lyrics with an other-worldly feel, using fairy tales as a motif. Dwarves and princes were interesting icons in fairy tales, so I went with them. Although Snow White was always fawned upon, somehow she would probably also have a certain meanness, a deeper side to her personality. It was amusing to express a man’s distrust of women with cynical twist.
I liked the unusual, shady-sounding vocals at the start of the song.
That was because e-zuka sensei demanded a theatrical feel, so I applied my seiyuu expressive skills. (laughs)
The 3rd song「Once & Forever (Plugless Live Edition)」was the audio recorded from the Kanagawa-ken Min Hall.
When the live concert ended, the reactions we got from “Once & Forever” and “modern strange cowboy” left a deep impression, so we thought that the fans might enjoy it if we included the songs.
This song was sung without drums and rhythm, so I didn’t know what to follow. It was difficult to decide if it was better to extend my vocals, or to match the melody played by the strings. Ultimately, there might have been some good parts that were dropped. I think the recording was taken from the Night live, but overall ensemble sounded better in this version.
But I was still amazed by the arrangement of the song. And so, please leave a final message about your plans from now.
The May tour we are having would be a first of sorts. Since we have always gone round the country in cold weather, we are looking for this this first warm experience.
There is still much time to listen to “Zetchou Poison” before the tour commences, so please remember the calls included in the song and have a blast with us at the live. Also, the pre-order information information for the tour tickets is included in the single, so you have to buy it. So, please buy, and thank you!
Thank you so much for the translation. I always wished I could read the japanese interviews, ‘cos they seem to be quite interesting.
